Service Learning and Math

Immigration, children who come from poorer, less privileged households.

We go to Merry Oaks elementary school for service learning.

One of the things we do at the school is help the children with math.

!st Trimester Reflections

One thing I am proud of from math so far this year is that I can easily understand the concepts and information we are given.

I wish I had done more corrections.

Algebra has not been a big challenge except when I have to or I can't remember things we had learned last year but have not learned frequently enough for me to use them without referencing a different source.

I feel I have mastered factoring.

Do more corrections. Print the notes for every class.

Real World Parabolas

A real world parabola is the McDonald's Golden Arches.

Golden-Arches.jpg

The original idea was thought up by Dick McDonald. George Dexter constructed the arches. The arches currently serve as the logo for McDonald's. The first arches made in the current likeness was made in 1962. The Golden Arches are found all over the world along with various McDonald's restaurants.

A couple of parabolas in Charlotte, NC are some random satellite dishes on our roof.

These satellite dishes were constructed and distributed by Dish Network in early 2004, are on my roof, their purpose is to have television available to my household and were most likely made in a factory.

Make a Million Dollars

We had to make a spreadsheet to show how long it would take to become a millionaire. It would take at least 50 years to become a millionaire. The longest would take would be about 234 years.

Google Documents

We have been using Google Documents in geometry class  recently. It gives easy access to certain documents that need to be viewed by the class. So far class assignments and homework assignments have been posted in our Docs. using Google Docs saves trees too!

Avatars!

Wrong one....

Still wrong.....

......Close enough. The avatar site I used was Meez. It can be very detailed in the, er, details of your avatar. I wouldn't mind if anyone used this site on my recommendation. But it takes a lot of time to make an avatar using this site. Well, it can... the details made me do it! O_o

DINO FEET!

Twiducate

Twiducate is basically like twitter but for school groups. So far we've had to describe ourselves in a tweet, and recommend a math web 2.0 site and a math related youtube video, all using Twiducate. I think it's a good way to communicate with each other using something besides Google, but I always have trouble with the password. link: http://twiducate.com/

Google Groups

For our Geometry class, we have a Google Group called TESGeometry2010. We haven't done much with the group. But I have noticed there is an area for discussions. Perhaps we will put that to use.
